    Social participation and social capital in South Yorkshire Coalfield Communities

    This article draws on responses from a 2004 survey of 3771 residents in nine South Yorkshire coalfield communities to explore levels of social participation and the relationship between social participation and social capital. The survey provides a relatively unusual data source as, in addition to collecting information about levels of participation, it elicits the type(s) of groups residents are involved with. The article provides two key messages for policy-makers and practitioners. The first relates to the findings and indicates that particular components of social capital are associated with particular types of social participation. The second relates to the survey methodology and demonstrates the importance of establishing the type(s) of groups that residents are involved with when examining levels of social participation.</p

    ‘Do you see what I see?’ Medical imaging: the interpretation of visual information

    Röntgen's discovery of x-rays in 1895, gave to medicine the extraordinary benefit of being able to see inside the living body without surgery. Over time, technology has added to the sophistication of imaging processes in medicine and we now have a wide range of techniques at our disposal for the investigation and early detection of disease. But radiology deals with visual information; and like any information this requires interpretation. It is a practical field and medical images are used to make inferences about the state of peoples' health. These inferences are subject to the same variability and error as any decision-making process and so the criteria for the success of medical imaging are based not entirely on the images themselves but on the performance of the decision-makers. Research in the accuracy of medical imaging must draw on techniques from a wide range of disciplines including physics, psychology, computing, neuroscience and medicine in attempting to better understand the processes involved in visual decision-making in this context and to minimise diagnostic error

    A Simple Test of the Shirking Model

    Although popular in some circles, efficiency wage models of the labour market have proved surprisingly difficult to test and direct evidence for the central tenets of the theory is rare to non-existent. In this paper we propose a simple test of the Shapiro-Stiglitz shirking model which is based on the following idea. In the traditional search model the distribution of accepted wages should be truncated below by the reservation wage. But, if shirking is important then the employer will never want to employ a worker at their reservation wage and the distribution of accepted wages should be truncated below by the reservation wage plus something. That something is a measure of the importance of shirking. We test this prediction using data from the UK Survey of Incomes In and Out of Work. The results are not particularly supportive of the shirking model.

    The general goal was to examine tilt sensitivity of horizontal semicircular canal afferents. Computer programs were tested which controlled the short axis centrifuge at the Vestibular Research Facility, acquired action potentials and produced data reduction analyses including histograms and gain and phase calculations. A pre-amplifier was also developed for the acquisition of action potentials. The data were gathered that can be used to contribute toward the understanding of the tilt sensitivity of semicircular canal afferents in the unanesthetized gerbil preparation

    A random matrix definition of the boson peak

    The density of vibrational states for glasses and jammed solids exhibits universal features, including an excess of modes above the Debye prediction known as the boson peak located at a frequency ω∗\omega^* . We show that the eigenvector statistics for boson peak modes are universal, and develop a new definition of the boson peak based on this universality that displays the previously observed characteristic scaling ω∗∌p−1/2\omega^*\sim p^{-1/2} . We identify a large new class of random matrices that obey a generalized global tranlational invariance constraint and demonstrate that members of this class also have a boson peak with precisely the same universal eigenvector statistics. We denote this class as boson peak random matrices, and conjecture it comprises a new universality class. We characterize the eigenvector statistics as a function of coordination number, and find that one member of this new class reproduces the scaling of ω∗\omega^{*} with coordination number that is observed near the jamming transition.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Supplementary Figures available at https://mmanning.expressions.syr.edu/epl2015
